Baldwin brothers skiing success

Silverdale brothers Ryan and Aaron Baldwin have topped New Zealand’s elite water skiers this year, winning titles that will see them competing on the world stage.

Fifteen year old Ryan was this year’s Overall Boys Water Ski Champion at the New Zealand National Water Ski Championships, making him a favourite for selection in the national team to compete in the Junior World Competitions in Colombia next year and ranking him among the top 20 under 17-year-old skiers worldwide.

Despite currently recuperating from internal injuries suffered during recent training, older brother Aaron’s summer scores on the water have resulted in his selection for the NZ Under-21 world team travelling to France in August.

Waterskiing has run in the family for generations, and both boys started skiing at an early age; Aaron was 11 and Ryan 10.

Distance education through Te Kura has helped the boys commit to the sport at such a high level.

‘Without Te Kura the boys just could not get away to train at specific times.  Many of the waterways used for skiing in New Zealand are public domains, but at the level the boys are at, they need the water exclusively to themselves and their training partners,’ says mum Kay.

Very likely to make the Open World squad in the next two years, both boys want to be NZ Overall Open Champions within three years.
