The Correspondence School student prize winners for 2009
The Correspondence School’s student prize winners for 2009 were announced recently in Wellington.
Eighty-two students from New Zealand and overseas were awarded prizes, with 15 students and their families gathering at the end of last term to receive their awards at a prize-giving ceremony held at Pipitea Marae.
The Correspondence School provided distance education from early childhood level to Year 13 to more than 25,000 students in 2009. Students came from a wide range of backgrounds with diverse learning needs.
Chief Executive Mike Hollings congratulated all prize winners for their hard work during the year. 'A prize giving is a time to reward and give recognition to those who have worked hard and excelled. One of the most exciting aspects about it is that these students have shown us what is possible,’ he said, ‘particularly when teachers and families work together to support students’ learning.'
Students were recognised for achievement in a wide range of areas and subjects, from te reo Maori to e-learning and classical studies. The Dux award went to Year 13 student Beth Williams, who was based in Vanuatu during the year.
The prize winners reflect TCS’s diverse student roll. Many of its students are from urban areas and come from a wide range of backgrounds. They include students who have been alienated or excluded from face-to-face schools, gifted students, young parents and students with special learning needs. TCS also provides programmes for students studying one or two subjects while they are enrolled at a face to face school.
During 2009 TCS opened regional offices in Hamilton and Auckland, increasing the number of teaching staff based outside Wellington. 'This enables us to work more closely with students, their whanau and communities, and to offer students more opportunities to meet with their teachers and other students face to face.’
